Nervous System Nourishment: Somatic & Ayurvedic Approach

“The body stores the trauma of our lives in muscular rigidity, thereby keeping us stuck in the past. When we release the tension in the body and align ourselves with gravity, we take a new stand in life. This allows us to be at ease with ourselves and in harmony in our relationship to others and to our planet.”

~Joseph Heller

Accessing the Root of the Issue- an Integrative Approach to Healing

Trauma may begin as acute stress from a perceived life threat or as the end product of cumulative stress. Both types of stress can seriously impair a person’s ability to function with resilience and ease and leave a lasting impact on the mind and body. Trauma may result from a wide variety of stressors such as accidents, invasive medical procedures, sexual or physical assault, emotional abuse, neglect, war, natural disasters, loss, birth trauma, or the corrosive stressors of ongoing fear and conflict.

The Somatic Experiencing approach facilitates the completion of self-protective motor responses and the release of thwarted survival energy bound in the body, thus addressing the root cause of trauma symptoms. This is approached by gently guiding clients to increase tolerance for difficult bodily sensations and suppressed emotions.

While trauma has varied manifestations and can affect individuals differently, Ayurveda – a 5000-year-old Indian system of medicine – offers a holistic approach to recovery. The ancient wisdom of Ayurveda is based on a personalized approach to health. This ancient science also treats the root cause of any illness rather than just the symptoms.

Healing The Wounds From The Inside Out

To heal from trauma, a comprehensive approach to recovery is needed. Ayurveda provides a holistic approach that integrates the mind, body, and spirit to help heal from emotional and physical trauma. Together SE and Ayurveda offer several modalities, including a sattvic diet, various yoga practices, movement, grounding in the “here & now”, connecting with the five senses (orientation), Ayurvedic herbs, and self-massage. Both promote a personalized approach to healing that addresses the root cause of the imbalance and source of trauma. Most importantly, Ayurveda offers a way to balance the mind and body and promote overall well-being, so that the application of SE practices can be better integrated thus empowering an individual to embark on a journey of health, happiness, and fulfillment.
